A Double Espresso with Nicolas

Nicolas Guichard is one of our Senior Scientists in the analytics department for biosimilars at Fresenius Kabi in Switzerland. His day typically begins with a quick check in the lab to ensure everything is running smoothly—and, of course, with a freshly brewed double espresso. For Nicolas, this ritual is more than just a caffeine boost; it’s a moment to connect with his team. "The coffee machine is like our hub – where ideas flow and the day kicks off with great energy," he shares.

His work in the lab is both dynamic and impactful. Nicolas develops and qualifies analytical methods, ensuring the highest quality for our biosimilar products while supporting the process development teams. "What I love most is that every day brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate. At Fresenius Kabi, I have the freedom to take on tasks that go beyond the typical scope of an analytical scientist. It’s rewarding to contribute in diverse ways and think outside the box," he explains.

Since joining Fresenius Kabi in 2020 after completing his PhD and working as a chemist in a hospital pharmacy lab, Nicolas has been inspired by the company’s unique approach to biosimilars. "Knowing that the work we’re doing now will soon make a difference in patients’ lives is incredibly rewarding," he says.

For Nicolas, overcoming challenges is part of the job he loves. "I’m a solution-oriented person. I like to be pushed to excellence and innovate to solve the challenges we face. At Fresenius Kabi, we never face issues – we tackle challenges and overcome them together."

But it’s not just the work that makes Fresenius Kabi special—it’s the people. "We’re a small, close-knit team of about 200, and the collaboration here is fantastic. Everyone supports one another, and there’s a shared drive to achieve our common goals," he says.

Outside of work, Nicolas is a passionate musician and photographer. Whether playing in orchestras – a hobby he’s enjoyed since he was twelve – or capturing breathtaking landscapes on his travels, his curiosity and creativity extend far beyond the lab.

For Nicolas, living the Fresenius promise Committed to Life means striving for excellence every day. "It’s about doing my best to ensure our products meet the highest standards and deliver on our commitment to patients."

Where are you working, and what does your role involve?

I’m working in Switzerland, in the biosimilar R&D center. My job is to develop analytical methods to support the development of our new products.

Can you describe a typical workday for you?

There is no typical workday, and that’s what I love about my job. I spend part of my time in the lab developing methods and performing analyses, and the rest is dedicated to solving challenges in the lab or on different projects.

What exactly do you do in the lab?

My job is to develop and qualify analytical methods to ensure the quality of our products – checking for impurities and ensuring the right profile. We also provide analytical support to guide process development.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning at work?

I start with a quick check in the lab to make sure everything is fine and the instruments that ran overnight are okay. After that, I greet my colleagues and check if the coffee machine is ready, as it’s where we gather in the morning.
